Internet Explorer’s 15th Anniversary: Will IE 9 be a celebration?

Would you believe that Internet Explorer is celebrating its 15th Anniversary? The browser has been at the top for most of that time, its market share has decreased over time due to constant attacks from the likes of Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome.

Microsoft knows that they have had their ups and downs over the years, but hopes that IE 9 will be a vast improvement. We wonder if Internet Explorer will be celebrating another 15 years, or would the Internet have changed by then?

Stan Schroeder from Mashable explains that when IE was first launched in 1995 it got off to a slow start, it was not until version 3 that things really took off due to the fact that the browser was being shipped with Windows. Since then Internet Explorer has been the dominant force in the web browser market, with some version much better than others.

However, Microsoft hopes that IE9 will be the best yet, and looking at this early preview, things are certainly looking good.

Do you think that Internet Explorer 9 will be able to increase its market share over Firefox?

    First!

So far so good with preview 4… firefox beta can't beat svg and canvas performance… lets see if they can bring that 95 acid score to a 100 then I might ditch firefox and opera.

The performance comparisons are close, but security and the new HTML5 and CCS3 as well as the other very developer friendly features, will make IE9 a very good, safe and fast browser. There are plenty of reasons to upgrade from IE8 or switch from another browser. There is a great breakdown of the features over at the MSDN blogs, dedicated to the Internet Explorer Platform Preview for Developers.
