Twitter’s Tweet Button: Tweetmeme competition

It seems as though there’s a new development for Twitter on the way with an official Tweet Button which according to reports could be launched as early as this Thursday. The Tweet Button will allow users to share articles on websites and will also tot up how many times a URL has been shared.

A single line of code, the Tweet Button can be put on any website with three different versions and customization enabled with 5 settings, according to Ben Parr over on Mashable. It’s already possible to embed the Tweet Button but doesn’t seem to be actually usable yet as only a few accounts have been activated so far.

It looks as though the Tweet Button is direct competition for TweetMeMe which is the source for many of the retweet features on websites and blogs. It’s possible that the two companies would have done a deal on this but no details are yet known. The three styles of buttons are Horizontal with count (110×20), Horizontal without count (55×20), and Vertical with count (55×63) and you can see the images by clicking the Mashable link above.
