Google Places API: Similar to Google Maps

Google currently announced its new Places API as part of its Google Maps API. It will enable users to check-in with different places that they would normally use. It will give extra information to users to access a business, name, address, phone number and a description of the location. Currently Google Maps can offer street maps, route finder via foot, car or public transport.

According to Jolie O’Dell at Mashable, Maps API Product Manager has commented that “Each Place Page consolidates together everything we know about a single Place, be it a business, point of interest, or geographical feature such as a city or neighbourhood”. He went on to say that “A more unified concept of Places more accurately reflects the way that Maps users see the world, and are working to bring an awareness of Places to the Google Maps API”.

Maps API for the time being will be solely concentrating on checkin applications as this is the direction in which the technological world is heading towards. Future ideas in the pipeline include the building of checkin applications using the API including client applications for the Buzz API.
