Nokia Ovi Maps and Store Downloads: Breaking Records

Nokia’s business is having a Yin and Yang effect, as their net profit is down by 40 percent this quarter – although its Ovi Store continues to grow. One main reason for this is the popularity of free maps for their handsets – something that iPhone customers are a bit jealous of.

Looking at the figures provided to us by Jason Ankeny from Fierce Mobile Content, downloads on the Ovi store is now averaging more than 1.7 million a day. A recent update to the app store has brought with it a number of improvements for the user experience.

Nokia has released a number of new smartphones – not as poplar as Android – and allows them access to over 13,000 apps. This number is never going to make a dent in Google’s or Apple’s app store downloads, but Nokia users must be happy otherwise they would have jumped ship ages ago.

So how do we pinpoint the one area that has helped Nokia’s Ovi Store growth? I would have to say that it is down to local language availability – meaning that you can visit the store being shown in a number of different languages.
