Advantages of a .CO Domain: Similar to .com, widely recognized

Are you an avid user of the internet? Chances are you’ve gotten used to domain names such as .com .co.uk and .net. Well now you may have to get used to another domain variety. Prepare for the .co domain!

Stan Schroeder is reporting over on Mashable that .co domains are now available through sites like Register.com, Network Solutions and GoDaddy.com. What this means for the internet is that there is a lot of newly available domain names which can now end in .co as well as in .co.uk and .com.

This could mean confusion for a lot of people however. I don’t think my mother, let alone my grandparents, would be able to understand going to a website with .co at the end. People who are used to the internet know how to visit a .com or .co.uk domain, and they might view a .co domain as a typo or error.

One of the first adopters of the .co domain is Twitter, which now owns t.co. When visiting www.t.co users are given the message “Twitter uses the t.co domain as part of a service to protect users from harmful activity, to provide value for the developer ecosystem, and as a quality signal for surfacing relevant, interesting tweets” which suggests that they are going to use the domain as a url shortener.
