Foursquare, a web and mobile application was set up in 2009 and allows users to connect with their friends and update their location. In March of this year, Foursquare has seen 500,000 users internationally. The application works when points are awarded for visiting frequent locations and along with this the user can then become mayor.
According to Samuel Huang at examiner.com, although Foursquare is still a fairly new application, it is gradually creeping ahead of its competitors such as Gowala and Loopt. Foursquare are not only enjoying its recent success, but has found that merchants have began taking advantage of its popular service by offering deals to Foursquare users. Starbucks, Sports Authority and Whole Foods have started to offer discounts for checking in or being mayor of their venues. For instance, Starbucks have been offering a $1 discount for all mayors of any of their locations.

Currently, Foursquare has iPhone, Android, webOS, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry application. This new application can only add to its current exciting line up.
