Facebook or Email: What comes first?

How do you start your digital day? Do you automatically go to your e-mails, or maybe you like to check out Facebook, Twitter or similar sites first? Have you ever thought about why you do one first and not the other?

There is an intriguing article by Jolie O’Dell over on Mashable, that looks into a study from Exact Target. The e-mail and social marketing company reckon that what you choose to look at first indicates the type of person you are.

If you check your e-mail first the company considers that you are more task-orientated and are only likely to communicate with brands online if you need something in particular. They go on to say that if you are more likely to look at Facebook first, you are more likely to be amicable to communication from brands, not directly linked to business or purchase.

When the study asked, “Where is the first place you go online in a typical day?” they received the following result. 58% answered e-mail, 20% said search portal, 11% said Facebook, 5% a news site, 3% company website/intranet and 3% answered other.
