If you can’t use Twitter or Facebook MI5 don’t want you

It seems that if you can’t use Twitter or Facebook then MI5 don’t want you anymore. Apparently intelligence chiefs at the Security Service have initiated a redundancy scheme for staff that can’t use the popular social networking sites and others like them.

Intelligence chiefs explain that this is because terrorists are increasingly using social networking sites to prepare their attacks so intelligence officers must be able to use the sites to monitor dialogue. The programme appears to target older workers at the intelligence service and MI5 say that the redundancies will be a mixture of voluntary and compulsory.

The plans were outlined to Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Commission last month by Jonathan Evans, MI5’s service director general. It’s significant to note that MI5’s newest recruitment drive is being targeted toward students with computer degrees. The organization is seeking to take on over 500 more officers in the coming year.

What do you think of the proposals outlined by MI5? Some would say it’s only fair that counter-terrorism officers have to keep up with the newest trends, but others might say that it’s unfair to older employees? We’d be interested in hearing your thoughts.

If you're in some sort of 'secret service' why the hell would you need twitter or facebook for? So you can tell everyone what you're doing? Or is it to spread disinformation?
