Box Office Results: Twitter predicts movie sales with buzz
Have you seen the new Twitter homepage and it’s trending topics that scroll across the screen? This new feature shows you some of the hottest topics being searched and tweeted on Twitter, and it’s this buzz that gives readers a good idea of what’s hot.
An interesting article on Mashable explains how this buzz can predict certain results. Some research – read here – carried out by HP shows that Twitter can predict box-office sales.

More surprising, Mashable writes that these predictions are more accurate than other industry-leading data sites. This includes The Hollywood Stock Exchange, and Twitter apparently beats them on predicting “real-world outcomes”.
It makes sense that if there is a lot of buzz around a movie that this could be watched more over the weekend than other less trended movies, but what if this buzz is for all the wrong reasons? Read more on Mashable about Twitter’s apparent predictions.
