GDC 2010: Virtual reality hamster ball on video

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to be rolling about in a giant hamster ball, and don’t tell me you haven’t, wonder no more. The Virtusphere (or giant hamster ball) has been put to the test at the GDC last week.

It’s basically a big plastic cage which goes in any direction by tilting and rolling. According to engadget.com, the test drive involved wearing a wireless head-mounted display and toting a fake gun.

Apparently though, wearing the head-gear interferes with your sense of balance, just when you need it most, but actually stepping around the virtual reality cage to confront the baddies feels better than turning an analog stick.

This is hardly a game to be enjoyed in your front room but with a few modifications, as an arcade experience could really take off. Take a look at the video below to view the test-drive. What do you think of the Virtusphere and would you like to have a go yourself? Let us know your thoughts.
